London, June 15 (EFE). This Friday, the United Kingdom and Portugal celebrate the 650th anniversary of the founding of the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance, the oldest diplomatic link in the world still in effect, with a religious mass in London attended by King Carlos III and Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Souza.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement issued on Thursday that the mass will be held in the Queen’s Church in the center of the British capital and will also be attended by British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly.

Said alliance was signed on June 16, 1373, between King Edward III of England and Kings Ferdinand and Eleanor of Portugal.

According to the State Department, an original copy of the treaty, which was signed nearly 20 years after the plague struck Europe and states committed to “peace, friendship and alliance,” will be displayed in the National Archives.

“The rich history between the UK and Portugal says something special about how we see the world and how our people get along. No other relationship on this planet has survived the test of time as well as ours,” Cleverley said in the note.

“We are now building on those strong foundations to achieve security and prosperity for our country,” he added.

In addition, Cleverly and his Portuguese counterpart, Joao Gomez Cravinho, plan to participate tomorrow in the so-called Strategic Dialogue to address issues such as climate change, defense and trade, and sign a memorandum of understanding to enhance mutual cooperation. EFE
