Municipalities are in red increase due to Covid-19 in Guatemala

In the provinces of Quiché, Zacualpa and Sololá, Santiago Atitlan stands out, as well as San Marcos La Laguna, with more cases per 100,000 inhabitants, as detailed by the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (Mspas).

In orange (high alert) and yellow (medium) they show 74 and 263 respectively, depending on the system that determines the danger level by colour-coded location.

The health authorities reiterated their call to the population to continue prevention measures, such as washing hands with soap and water, physical distancing, and the use of masks.

Mspas expects an increase in Covid-19 infections in July and August, a disease that has been present in this Central American country for more than three years.

A week ago, the temporary hospital in the western section of Quetzaltenango, the only one of the five arranged against Covid-19, was closed to function.

The Minister of the Health Portfolio, Francisco Coma, warned of the possibility of an increase in cases, but ruled out that it would be a matter of concern, because, he said, they are mild.

Experts note that Micron’s variant XBB1.1.5, prevalent for some time here and in much of the world, still deserves attention.

Guatemala, as of last May, had barely exceeded 42 percent of the population vaccinated against Covid-19, just over seven million inhabitants, out of a total of 17.2 million.
