New uniforms and bulletproof vests for the Guatemalan police

The Ministry of the Interior stressed that they will also receive at least 20,000 bulletproof vests, which seeks to boost the confidence and morale of those forces in high-risk situations, as well as the ability to respond.

The new 80,000-purchased uniform will have a QR code, by which the authorities will be able to identify who it belongs to.

Citizens, for their part, can use mobile phones to obtain information from the police officer who carries them.

The clothing is part of the developments in the Karama axis of the police transformation strategy, which will be presented to the press in an official act this morning in the field of training school maneuvers.

Al-Holfa warned that the PNC’s special forces would continue to use black uniforms for tactical reasons.

The bulletproof vests are designed with the latest technology and made of highly resistant materials to ensure protection.

The PNC was established on July 7, 1997, under the peace agreements signed between the government and the Guatemalan National Revolutionary Union a year earlier.

It is made up of more than 42,000 people, including agents, officers and other ranks, to serve a population of 17.3 million, according to official data issued by the institution.

Changes in the military uniform have been constant in different periods, since in 2012 the former Minister of the Interior Mauricio López Bonilla also decided to make another reform of the navy blue uniform.

Despite efforts to ensure citizen protection in the first place, analysts point to a lack of serious commitment on the part of the highest government figures.

They expose the shortcomings of that body such as shortages of staff, tools, supplies and corruption, among others that make it difficult to fully comply with jobs in the midst of a complex scenario.
