Progress in the political trial against Laso is a focus week in Ecuador

Quito, May 13 (Prensa Latina) The progress of the impeachment proceedings against the President of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, has focused press and citizen attention this week that ends here today.

The countdown to the proceedings against Laso, accused of embezzlement, began on Friday when Assemblywoman Viviana Fellows announced that the president of the Andean region would stand trial next Tuesday, May 16.

Fellowes confirmed that the call will be published in the general legislative session Sunday, May 14, which is the day when the assembly will meet to change its powers.

Before the legislator announced the questioning of the trial of the Head of State, Secretary General of the National Assembly (Parliament), Álvaro Salazar sent Lasso a resolution of the plenary session of the Legislative Council, in which the impeachment trial was against him. It was approved with the full file of the process, and sent in the same way to the 137 members of the Assembly for their review, before a vote.

According to the agenda for next Tuesday, the Speaker of Parliament, Virgilio Sacisella, will ask the four members of the Assembly requesting the trial to choose two of the interrogators, and they will have two hours to present the evidence presented during the process.

Then, the Ecuadorian governor will present his defense arguments in three hours.

After the intervention, the Lasso will withdraw from the plenum and begin the debate, which may last for several days, during which the 137 members of the Assembly can intervene, for 10 minutes each, as specified.

Once the discussion is over, the plenary session will convene within a further five days to decide, on the charges and the evidence of the defence, if the lasso should be removed, which requires 92 votes. If there is no motion of censure, the chapter is archived.
