Finance Minister Mario Marcel and the election results: “People expect more actions than words”
The Chilean Finance Minister referred to the election result and the wide vote received by the Republican Party. In this regard, he indicated that he met with the leadership of that party to advance tax reform, within the framework of the consultation process that his portfolio carried out to incorporate new proposals into the project, the first version of which did not succeed in the House of Representatives candidate in mid-March. “We are still waiting for those proposals that will arrive now that the electoral process is over,” he said.
On whether broad citizen support for this party can change the political dynamics of reaching agreements in Congress, Marcel explained, “Yesterday’s results largely show that people expect more actions than words.” “It means that all of us who have the potential to influence this action, I think we have to commit to contributing to this.”
The minister noted that “no one is helping the indefinite postponement of important issues such as tax and pension reform or the constitutional process itself,” and called for progress in the climate of agreement. “I hope that all sectors, whether they are doing well or not, will have the will to embark on this effort,” he said.
