This week took place the twenty-fourth symposium organized by the Mexican Association of Museums and Science Centers in our country. It is the most important conference that brings together spaces dedicated to linking science with society. Under the slogan “We see each other again” is the first face-to-face conference we have held since the beginning of the pandemic and it was announced in 2020 and by a favorable coincidence yesterday that the symposium ended, the World Health Organization also declared the end of the health emergency due to COVID19. As Maria Emilia Paez, Director of UNIVERSUM, said: “We are, quite literally, survivors of the pandemic.”
The conference was organized in an exemplary manner by the team led by Eduardo Santana, from the Guadalajara Museum of Environmental Sciences, and the team led by Arturo González, President of AMMCCyT. It was a huge success. Members of the community of museums and science centers in Mexico, researchers, curators and private companies interested in making science and technology increasingly important in our country participated.
During the presentations, we share the achievements we have achieved as a unit as well as the new challenges we face. We are a union in crisis. There are fewer and fewer museums and science centers in our country and many of them face serious challenges in order to remain operational. We have to stay relevant! We define ourselves as such through our results. This is the main challenge discussed during the symposium: how to make our audience consider us important and to a large extent that work in ourselves, in our organizations and with the people we work with in these wonderful places. We must be convinced of the work we do and that achieving the goals means the difference between a country that lags behind in science and a country that stands out through its progress in science.
People like Eduardo Santana and his entire team are an inspiration to our federation. Against all odds, it has kept alive the dream of a university museum of environmental sciences that has suffered from the indifference of many government authorities who even allowed a budget to start the project and then, without further ado, withdraw it without getting it right. Technical explanation. However, for today, this museum already has a building under construction and they suggested starting some spaces this year. There, in the Museum of Environmental Sciences of Guadalajara, this great national conference of museums took place, where, despite the fact that federal public policies are working against science and stripping it of citizenship, the Federation of Museums and Science Centers remains, aware of the challenges and ready to face them and overcome them. It has to make Mexico a conscious and thinking country that makes informed decisions. Congratulations on “seeing each other again”! Here we will continue!
