Geneva-. The World Health Organization today launched a new initiative to help countries better prepare for future pandemics, with guidance on integrated planning for dealing with respiratory pathogens such as influenza or coronavirus.
Called the Preparedness and Resilience for Emerging Threats (PRET) initiative, it incorporates the latest tools and approaches for shared learning and teamwork created during the Covid-19 pandemic and other recent public health emergencies.
With this, the World Health Organization (WHO) will use a transmission method to guide countries in pandemic planning, given that many capabilities are shared across groups of pathogens.
PRET responds to the call for technical guidance and support to strengthen and strengthen integrated preparedness and response, as outlined in World Health Assembly resolutions.
According to the agency, Covid-19 and other health emergencies have shown that countries must be operationally ready to respond to infectious disease threats, through dedicated preparedness plans and better coordination and collaboration with other sectors, such as agriculture.
In the opinion of Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, such preparation and response should not be the responsibility of the health sector alone, but should involve various sectors and disciplines.
