The Women of Courage Award was given to the researcher for her contribution to marine science

Due to his extensive and distinguished career in the study of marine sciences, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Julio Salas, Awarded today award “brave women” for the researcher Maria Angela Barbieri.

This distinction is granted to fishermen, workers in related activities, and scientists who excel in their field. Its aim is to highlight the contribution of women in various fields related to marine activity.

Barbieri holds a PhD in Biological Oceanography from the University of Brittany Occidental (France) Distinguished professor, researcher and fisheries engineer from p Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaiso (PUCV), which has a history of more than 40 years in business.

The academic pioneered hydroacoustic research in Chile, a key aspect of stock determination of marine resources that determines fishing quotas.

In this regard, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture said: “For us as an institution, and for the scientific and academic community and the entire fishing community, Dr. Barbieri’s work constitutes a great contribution and legacy to the country in terms of science from the sea. Research vessel named after him

Name d. Barbieri” of the new fishing and oceanographic research vessel, funded by the State of Chile, arose precisely in appreciation of the remarkable and impeccable profession of Dr. María Angela Barbieri.

Among the main tasks to be undertaken by the vessel, which is scheduled to be delivered in the first half of 2024, it should be noted the performance of acoustic surveys of fishing resources and biomass assessment of surface resources in coastal sectors and in inland waters.
