The 86-year-old beer brewed for Edward VIII’s annulled coronation is up for auction

Historic beer collection

The beer at the time was 12% ABV (alcohol by volume) and fruity flavor as a result of the blend of English hops and malt.

“It is absolutely amazing that this beer has been in the cellar for 86 years,” said royal historian Kate Williams, who is gathering historical information on the annulled coronation of Edward VIII, after brewing on May 12, 1937.

John Bickson, former head brewery at Greene King, said other surprises could be found in the brewery’s spacious basement where “there may be more old beers waiting to be rediscovered” although it would be best not to wait so long for the next batch. .

The 86-year-old beer will be sold as a collector’s item because He can no longer drink.

“We’ve been brewing for over 200 years and we make iconic beers, like our Coronation beers of 1937 and 2023, which means we can capture moments from history to share with future generations,” said Jack Palmer, Head Brewery at Greene King.

Greene King has another souvenir beer that you can drink. The new version of “Coronation Ale” has been announced and is now available in the UK, which is 4% ABV, with hints of citrus and fruit.
