Britain on Friday announced a 20-year plan to capture carbon, commit to nuclear power while increasing energy supplies, and aims to achieve a zero-economy by mid-century.
According to a statement, an investment in the project worth 20 billion euros ($24 billion) will help create 50,000 jobs.
He added that Finance Minister Jeremy Hunt was due to give more details in Wednesday’s budget announcement.
Speaking on Friday, Hunt said the move would help avoid a repeat of the spiraling energy bills borne by millions of Britons since last year after top energy producer Russia cut off global oil and gas supplies.
“We don’t want to see bills that high anymore, it’s time to take clean energy back,” Hunt said in the statement.
“That is why we are fully committed to UK nuclear power, supporting a new generation of small modular reactors and investing… in clean energy through carbon capture.”
Energy Security Secretary Grant Shapps said the government wanted Britain, “the world leader in offshore wind”, to catch up with “the UK’s carbon capture and nuclear industries”.
In the short term, the government’s plan will “promote projects to store 20-30 million tons of carbon dioxide per year by 2030.”
According to the statement, this is equivalent to the emissions of 10 to 15 million cars.
