This year marks the 49th anniversary of the attempted kidnapping of Princess Anne of the United Kingdom, an anonymous story in which a man tried to take Elizabeth II’s daughter by force.
Seven people in all attempted to arrest Ian Ball, an unemployed man from north London. Princess Anne and her husband of four months were on their way to Buckingham Palace after their appearance at an 8pm charity event on March 20, 1974.
Just a few meters before reaching Buckingham Palace, a car forced them to stop. Quickly, a man got out of this car and while the driver thought it was going to be a traffic fight, this person started shooting.
At the time, Princess Anne was one of the most popular members of the royal family. People loved her, especially after she married a “normal” man, Mark Phillips, a captain in the British Army.
After the man shoots several members of Ann’s team, he opens the door of his limo and asks her to come with him. Unfazed, she attempts to strike up a conversation with him while waiting for more police to come to her rescue.
Ann later told the police, “I kept telling him I wasn’t going to get out of the car, that I didn’t want to get out of the car.”
A man named Ronald Russell, an executive at a cleaning company, recognizes the princess’s limousine and stops his car in front of Paul’s car, in case he tries to escape, it will be impossible for him. Then hit him on the head. While this stranger, who was a boxer, distracted the criminal, Princess Anne quickly got out of the car. Ball tried to catch it, but gracefully, she evaded him, climbed back up the top, and before he could follow it, Russell punched him in the face again.
As more cops arrive on the scene, Paul decides to run. The police managed to arrest and detain him.

The 26-year-old had mental health problems and after renting a car under the name of John Williams, the man orchestrated the kidnapping of the Queen’s daughter. Handcuffs, tranquilizers and a ransom note for the Queen were found inside the car.
Ball will ask for £2m to be delivered in 5 pence.
