Signed by the CEO of CCSS, Roman Macaya, the representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Costa Rica, Milton Moreno, and as the guest of honor of the United Nations High Commissioner, Filippo Grandi, the agreement stipulates that insurance will start on April 1 and will end on December 31.
Before it takes effect, Acnur will transfer 1,401 million colons – just over $ 2 million $ 315,000 – to cover the total voluntary insurance of the target population, i.e. refugees or applicants with this condition.
During the signing of the agreement, Makaya said that these people may face situations that put their health at risk, adding to their biological, social and emotional vulnerability.
For his part, Grandi emphasized that the inclusion of asylum seekers and refugees in the public health system in Costa Rica, through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees-CCSS agreement, is a concrete example of how international cooperation and multilateralism can help host countries respond to forced displacement.
The CCSS states that it is not the first time that the institution has signed an agreement of this kind, since between 2007 and December 31, 2017, the agreement was in effect aimed at ensuring persons in refugee status and those who request this condition. .
It indicates that between January 1, 2020, and March 31, 2021, six thousand people were insured under this method.
