On the twenty-first anniversary of the reopening of Guantanamo Bay, demonstrators are calling for the prison to be closed

In Washington, D.C., a group of protesters gathered on Wednesday in front of the White House to demand that President Biden close the prison at the US naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The demonstrators wore orange suits and black hoods to mark the 21st anniversary of the reopening of this notorious prison that houses hundreds of Muslim men, adults and minors, who were rounded up overseas and turned over to US authorities. 35 men remain imprisoned at Guantanamo today.

In an open letter to President Biden, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Center for American Constitutional Rights, and more than 150 other organizations wrote: “The detention facility at Guantanamo was specifically designed to circumvent legal obligations and government officials. The Bush administration embraced torture there.” […] Guantánamo continues to inflict greater and deeper harm on the deteriorating elderly men who remain held there indefinitely. Most of them have not been charged and none of them received a fair trial.”
