London, Jan. 5 (EFE). – The leader of the British Labor Party, Keir Starmer, promised this Wednesday that his party would provide the “change” that the United Kingdom needs and predicted that his formation – the main opposition group – would restore control “to the electorate, thus carrying the slogan used by the campaign to leave the European Union (Brexit) in 2016.

Starmer delivered a speech in London just a day after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak yesterday outlined the government’s vision for the coming months with promises of economics (halve inflation or grow the economy), health (fewer delays in public health services) and immigration (stop small boats arriving across the English Channel). ).

In his speech, the Labor politician promised to “give back control” to voters, making his slogan the main slogan used in the 2016 Brexit referendum campaign.

He said that with Labor this phrase “will go from being a slogan to being a solution. From a slogan to change”.

“We will distribute control outside of Westminster. We will devolve powers to support employment, transport, energy, climate change, housing, culture, provide childcare and manage municipal finances,” he predicted.

In this sense, Starmer asserted that his party would give communities “trust, power and control”, saying that local authorities should be able to take “more decisions”.

On the other hand, he also announced that the Labor Party would scrap the Strikes Bill proposed by the Conservative government (which plans to create a minimum level of services) at a time when various sectors of the country, such as railways or nurses, are celebrating several days-long strikes to protest the weakness of their salaries.

In this sense, he said that the legislation that the executive branch wants to implement “will not work” and considers that the government has received advice that “will make the situation worse.”

“I don’t think legislation is the way labor disputes are settled,” he said.

The Labor leader also noted that 2023 “marks a new chapter” for the country, as we must “look forward with hope”.

He warned that “to prosper, the UK needs change (…) and citizens are looking to Labor to provide that change.”

As he explained, the citizens view his formation as “a competent and compassionate party that understands what it means to put the country first” and said Labor can build “a fairer, greener, more dynamic country with an economy that works for everyone, not just for those in the top “.

He promised: “A new government and a new way of governing – the UK needs both. The UK will have both with Labour.” EFE
