Ecuador conducts a technical test for the 2023 sectoral elections

In the presence of representatives of political organizations, the National Elections Council verified the functioning of the mechanism by which the minutes of the meeting will be processed and the results of voting for the election of local and regional authorities published.

In addition, this system will process votes to determine the members of the Council for Citizen Participation and Social Control (Cpccs) and the eight-question referendum promoted by the government of President Guillermo Lasso.

The test, described as successful by the National Electoral Council, made it possible to identify potential incidents and take immediate action to prevent them from happening on February 5, when more than 13 million Ecuadorians were called to the polls.

In addition, and as part of the preparations for the process, the first electoral simulation will take place on Sunday, January 8, in which deficiencies will be refined to ensure the operation of the entire mechanism, in accordance with the powers of the National Electoral Council.

Meanwhile, candidates prepare for the campaign, which will run Jan. 3 through Feb. 2. Those aspiring to mayors and governors in jurisdictions of more than 100,000 people prepare for debates on issues such as security, the economy, and the environment.

Although the contest officially starts in January, evangelism has already begun on social networks, especially regarding referendum questions.

As President Laso, his team and their allies defend the approval of the referendum, the controversy grows, with some seeing it as unnecessary and ineffective for solving the country’s problems.
