Over 8,300 students from Castilla-La Mancha educational centers will meet 100 scientists from UCLM and the National Hydrogen Center

Titled “Interviewing a World from Your Classroom,” more than 8,300 students from 146 independent community learning centers will be interviewing nearly a hundred students next Thursday, 11th, through the Microsoft Teams platform. Scientists from the University of Castilla – La Mancha (UCLM) and the National Hydrogen Center in Puertollano mark the celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

This initiative, which is jointly organized by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports and UCLM, will take place from 9:45 am to 12:00 pm. About 200 calls were planned from 87 cities in Castilla-La Mancha (15 from Albacete Province; 31 from Ciudad Real; 11 from Cuenca and 30 from Toledo).

The researchers and scholars interviewed cover different branches of knowledge: the sciences, health sciences, engineering and architecture, but also the arts and humanities, social and legal sciences, because not all sciences are done in a dress, and hence not only the subjects of ‘science’. You find this initiative interesting. In addition, it targets all educational levels, from elementary school, about 60% of the total, to ESO, baccalaureate and vocational training. An experimental experiment in this sense has already been carried out during the celebration of Science Week, which has been highly acclaimed.

The Minister of Education, Culture and Sports, Rosa Anna Rodriguez, indicated that we must make it easier for girls and boys to discover their scientific careers or not, and make the stereotypes we carry from the past disappear from the social imagination. “It is time to normalize that girls have STEAM careers without feeling stigmatized for doing something that was not popular in the past,” she said.

Rodriguez asked teachers, families, the media, and society as a whole to raise awareness “so that education occurs in equality where the important thing is scientific projects and progress and not if they are realized by men or women or the number of scholars from projects.”

For his part, the President of Castilla-La Mancha University, Julian Garde, wanted to thank UCLM women for their participation in 11F activities for which “we went further and became a reference for the national level thanks exclusively to this group of women, researchers and teachers”.

The Rector considers this a “distinct feature of UCLM” and gives as an example “more than 8,300 boys and girls who will be interviewed” in this coordinated activity with the Ministry of Education of the Community Council of Castilla-La Mancha and organized by the UCLM Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit.

Scientists and researchers will encourage young women through social networks

On the one hand, and as a complement to this initiative, from today until next Wednesday, from the social networks of the Castilla-La Mancha Education Portal, videos of six scientists and researchers doing their work on the campuses of various UCLM universities in our independent community. In the videos, they encourage young women to develop scientific studies.

Scientists and researchers who participated in it are: Esther Fernández Molina, from Albacete School of Law. Maria Teresa Koberis Montserrat, from the Almaden School of Mining and Industrial Engineering; Virginia Sanchez Rodriguez, from Ciudad Real School of Education; Anna Maria Torres Aranda of Cuenca Polytechnic School; Esmeralda Santacruz Salas from the School of Health Sciences in Talavera de la Reina; And Susanna Cecina Prieto from the Toledo College of Environmental Sciences and Biochemistry.

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is a celebration declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 in order to achieve full and equitable access and participation in science and achieve gender equality.
