Bloomberg — A group of Conservative lawmakers have written to the Treasury Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, calling for spending cuts on diversity and equality measures, and lower taxes instead.
According to the Telegraph Saturday, the Conservative Way Forward will publish a report on Monday attacking the government’s plans to spend £7 billion of public money on “politically motivated and divisive activities”.
In another sign of the breakdown in party discipline, Conservative MP Lee Anderson wrote in the Mail on Sunday that Rishi Sunak’s administration was losing control of immigration. Anderson, who was elected to parliament in 2019 in a traditionally pro-Labor area, said he was admonishing the party for failing to make enough profits from the Brexit vote three years ago.
“We voted to take back control of our money, the law and our borders. Well, this little boat fiasco has shown that we have lost control of all three,” he wrote, referring to the number of immigrants making the often perilous journey across the Channel to England.
Even with a parliamentary majority of 70, Sunak is struggling to get his policies into the debating room. After 12 years in power, his party has been divided by competing demands from various factions, from lawmakers demanding a sweeping plan for economic growth to those concerned with the country’s biggest tax burden in generations.
