The Science Park of Granada (Andalusia) opened today at the Technisches Museum in Vienna BioInspiración. Innovation from Nature, a production of the Andalusian Museum, begins its international tour in the Austrian city, where it will continue until October 2023. “We are very pleased that ‘BioInspiración’ gives us the opportunity to demonstrate the enormous potential of mimicry of nature,” said the Director General of the Museum of Science and Technology in Vienna, Peter Overiter, during The opening of the exhibition.
For his part, the Director of the Science Park, Luis Alcala, who attended the opening, accompanied by the curators of the exhibition. “Mankind is inspired by nature, cognizant of the beauty, harmony and perfection that living things have achieved over millions of years of evolution. BioInspiración displays some of the everyday solutions developed through trial, error and selection in the Earth Lab and guides visitors through the amazing journey they have been immersed in. Nature, innovation and creativity in fields as diverse as architecture, medicine, space exploration or sports, among others.
The exhibition is part of an international project promoted by the same science park with two of the most prestigious science museums in Europe: DASA (Germany) and the Technisches Museum in Vienna (Austria) under the motto “A sustainable future”. Progress, innovation and sustainability.
With more than 200 technological components, scale and audiovisual models, sets, models and interactive modules, BioInspiración offers a journey that integrates nature, innovation and creativity in fields as diverse as engineering, robotics, transportation, packaging, energy, architecture, urban planning, medicine, sports or space exploration.
Biological inspiration. Innovation from nature provides some of the best examples of this scientific discipline and the cutting-edge technology behind it. The exhibition is organized into six areas: “Velcro closures: a classic example of imitation of nature”, “Transport and Technology”; “Materials and packing”; ‘Architecture and Design’; “Energy saving and environment”; ‘medicine’; “Sports” and “Space Exploration”.
Touring the different spaces, visitors will be surprised by the many innovations we enjoy today that are inspired by nature. Like how the skeleton of the femur, our tallest and most resistant bone, inspired the engineers of the Eiffel Tower, or how the kingfisher’s beak, long, narrow and streamlined, was the model for Japanese bullet trains. A robot with a chameleon’s tongue capable of grasping objects of any shape, syringes that do not cause pain thanks to a ‘copy’ of the system used by mosquitoes or resistant helmets that mimic the structure that protects the woodpecker’s brain are other things he will discover the importance of ‘reconnecting’ with nature to learn from its ability on evolution and adaptation.
The influence of nature’s beauty on architectural design can also be seen in scale models such as Tonkin Liu’s Tower of Light, which is inspired by the structure of mollusk shells. The exhibition “BioInspiración”, which will return to Granada in 2025, will be on display in Austria until October 2023 and in Germany through 2024 to project the image of the Science Park, Granada, Andalusia and Spain in the European arena as promoters of scientific culture and international references in the production of the exhibition.
