The Arab League called on Lebanon to avoid a presidential vacuum

Beirut, October 7 (Prince Latina) The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States called today on Lebanon to avoid a presidential vacuum and elect the next head of state before the constitutional deadline expires on the 31st of this month.

After the visit of Undersecretary Hossam Zaki, the regional body reported that Lebanon does not tolerate a state of “getting used to the crisis”, amid the difficult living conditions of citizens and the social environment.

The League expressed, in a statement, its concern over the absence of channels of consultation between the Lebanese political leaders, stressing that relying on external solutions only will not contribute to the collapse of the response to international tension.

The Arab Foundation reiterated its readiness to play any role to help Lebanon overcome the political crisis in the event that the next President of the Republic is not elected for the next six years.

During his stay in Beirut, Ambassador Zaki exchanged with President of the Republic, Michel Aoun. Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati and Interim Director of External Relations Abdallah Bou Habib.

The representative of the League of Arab States also spoke with the leaders of the parliamentary blocs. Among them are the Speaker of the Council, Nabih Berri, and the heads of the National Current parties, Gebran Bassil. Lebanese Forces Samir Geagea. The Progressive Socialist, Walid Jumblatt and the Phalangists, Sami Gemayel.

Zaki heard different views on the presidential elections and the repercussions of entering a vacancy period, with less than four weeks remaining until the end of the constitutional term.

Next Thursday, the Lebanese Parliament held the second plenary session with the aim of completing the quorum required to appoint a new member of the Maronite Christian community to take over the presidency.
