They invest a million dollars for the resilience of entrepreneurs in El Salvador

The Managing Committee of the project “Support to the Comprehensive Development Plan for Central America, within the framework of the EU’s global response to COVID-19” has agreed to the participation of a total of 200 association groups as beneficiaries, which will receive capital for investment. With a total value of $1 million.

The project, funded by the European Union and implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in alliance with the Government of El Salvador, aims to mitigate the impact of the food crisis on the pandemic, improve long-term resilience and reduce forced and/or irregular migration flows among the participating populations.

The beneficiary groups belong to 12 municipalities in San Miguel Province that are challenged by poverty, high migration flows and malnutrition, and because they are located in the Central American Dry Corridor.

The projects to be implemented by these groups will correspond to 86% of the agricultural business and 14% of the non-agricultural business. Among the priority elements of the project: poultry, beekeeping, livestock, vegetables, pig farming, tilapia, food, bakery, cocoa, tourism, wine and recycling, among others.

They will receive training, technical assistance and support to prepare business plans and non-refundable supplies, in order to facilitate their access to markets, promote social and economic development, and enhance family income and employment opportunities.

The representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of El Salvador, Diego Ricaldi, commented: “The technical and financial support that we will provide to these 200 trade union groups allows us to promote the sustainable and resilient development of the producers operating in the Dry Corridor in El Salvador.

In response to the FAO Global Strategy, we will focus in each of the activities on promoting the promotion of better sustainable production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better quality of life for all.”

The project is being implemented in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras and serves 600 agricultural and related services cooperative groups with an investment of over $8.4 million and aims to promote the sustainable well-being of 5,400 families in the region.
