UNITED NATIONS, June 24 (Prinsa Latina) The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, will travel next Friday to Paramaribo, Suriname, to participate in the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), they announced here today.
According to his spokesperson’s office, the UN High Representative will attend the opening ceremony of that meeting on July 3.
Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, said Guterres will speak at this conference about his recent announcement that the United Nations will work to ensure universal coverage of early warning systems for environmental events.
He added that the Portuguese diplomat would learn for himself the steps taken by the Caribbean to address climate challenges and build resilience, despite the scarcity of resources.
Dujarric explained that the UN Secretary-General in Suriname will visit an indigenous community in the tropical forest to learn more about how they can benefit from their knowledge on adaptation issues to climate impacts.
The spokesman added that he will also reach the site of the mangrove forests, where he will witness the exposure of the country’s coast to floods, which are increased due to rising sea levels and severe weather phenomena.
According to United Nations data, the Caribbean is among the regions most affected in the world by climate change, although it contributes the least to the problem due to its very low emissions.
A recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned that people living in that region are up to 15 times more likely to die from climate impacts.
Guterres is currently in Lisbon for the United Nations Conference on Oceans, which will take place from June 27 to July 1.
