Cuba rejected the selective manipulation of the methods and practices of the United Nations Security Council, which is still used as an instrument of pressure on sovereign states.

He said Al Jazeera’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Pedro Luis Pedroso, must stop this practice, as well as the interference of that body in matters outside its competence, particularly those relating to the mandate of the General Assembly.

He said that increasing transparency in the work of the Security Council will facilitate its effective work on behalf of all UN member states in maintaining international peace and security, in accordance with Article 24 of the UN Charter.

The Cuban ambassador insisted the day before that the council must represent the interests of all countries in order to preserve multilateralism and the credibility of the multilateral organization.

Namely, on Thursday, the annual report of the Security Council was presented to the General Assembly, after the election of five new non-permanent members.

Ecuador (190 votes), Japan (184), Malta (185), Mozambique (192) and Switzerland (187) were elected to form that body from January 2023 to December 2024.

Currently, most UN member states agree that the composition of the organization responsible for ensuring international peace and security, consisting of only 15 members, does not represent or reflect the changing global reality.

Among the most discussed issues are the veto power of the five permanent members: Russia, China, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France.

The reform of the United Nations Security Council – which is of great importance to the multilateral organization – has been on hold for a long time, although talks on the topic began 20 years ago.
