Havana, May 15 (RHC) Nearly four million Lebanese registered in the electoral register will decide next Sunday at the polls for the future of the Land of the Cedars by certifying their constitutional right to the parliamentary elections.

This day will mark the third and final stage in the electoral process after the diaspora vote in 58 countries (May 6 and 8) and the electoral staff vote (May 12).

Lebanon had called elections last December after the social unrest in the fall of 2019 and the explosion in the port of Beirut that killed more than 200 people in August 2020.

A total of 718 candidates on 103 electoral lists will compete for the 128-seat legislature equally divided between Christians and Muslims.

In this number of contenders, 118 women appear, seven more than the entries four years ago (111).

Monitoring teams from the European Union, the League of Arab States and the Lebanese Association for Democratic Elections will assess the voting process in all eight of the country’s governorates and 25 constituencies.

Traditional movements such as the Free Patriotic Movement, the Lebanese Forces, the Hezbollah duo, national liberal and progressive socialist parties appear among the main contenders for the Lebanese vote. (source: PL)
