Christophe Domenici, the former French rugby union winger, has passed away at the age of 48. The news was announced by Stade Français, who played with him for 11 years, while he was known 65 times.

He helped the Parisian team win five French championships and was one of the big stars in the 1999 Rugby World Cup, particularly in France’s semi-final victory over New Zealand, when he scored an unforgettable attempt.

The France Rugby team tweeted: “The great French rugby family is in mourning after the tragic death of our wing, Christophe Dominic,. We are thinking especially of his family and loved ones.”

Former Irish captain Brian O’Driscoll also expressed his condolences, writing on Twitter: “Very sad to hear of the sudden death of Christophe Dominici. A French footballer full of flair and with tremendous success throughout his career. I hope he’s torn.”

Prosecutors opened an investigation into the cause of his death.
