The US multinational FlightAware warned today that another 1,300 flights will be canceled due to the jump in Covid-19 infections among flight personnel and the severe weather that has plagued the country.
According to the entity’s website, Tuesday’s massive cancellations affect those trying to return home over the Christmas and year-end holidays, wreaking havoc on airlines.
For their part, airlines must strive to rebook people whose flights have been delayed or canceled.
Passengers are complaining about intense customer service waits as many try to go home to celebrate the New Year, according to the Washington Post.
The Transportation Security Administration said more than 2 million Americans traveled in the past week, an impressive number with the Omicron variant moving across the country.
According to the newspaper, airlines were optimistic about a full recovery of flights in December, with about 90 percent of capacity booked during the Thanksgiving season – at the end of November – in 2019.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention earlier this week reduced the isolation period from 10 to five days for those who tested positive for Covid-19, the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2.
The newspaper pointed out that the decision helped the affected aircraft crews return to work more quickly.
Tuesday’s cancellation numbers were slightly lower than those recorded in the previous two days.
On Sunday and Monday, about 1,400 domestic and international flights were canceled or delayed.
