Ministers will strengthen cooperation in Costa Rica in the face of the environmental crisis

The Ministry of Environment and Energy (Minae) specifies that the Forum of Environment Ministers in Latin America and the Caribbean will celebrate its fortieth anniversary with a special session to strengthen cooperation in the face of the tri-planetary crisis of climate change, loss. biodiversity and pollution.

The event, which will be held in a mixed manner – virtual and face to face – will be a space to discuss the future and role of this regional political space, within the framework of the 50th anniversary of the United Nations Environment Programme. (United Nations Environment Programme).

The source indicates that the latter acts as the secretariat of the Forum from its regional office in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The forum – which refers to the port – is currently promoting solutions to important challenges such as gradually closing open landfills, financing climate action and protecting forests, promoting a circular economy, and monitoring air quality, among others.

The meeting participants are expected to address ways to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This is in the context of the economic and social recovery after Covid-19, and they will discuss how to strengthen alliances and fund environmental action.

When asked about the importance of the Forum, PNUMA’s Regional Director, Jocelyn Alvarez, noted that it contributes to bridging the gap between regional and global environmental agendas.

He added that its presence is essential to raise the voice of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on the world stage and to translate scientific progress into concrete policies that enhance environmental management.

“Today, as environmental crises threaten human health and the fight against poverty, strengthening this cooperation program is more important than ever,” Alvarez stressed.

The President of Minae, Andrea Mesa, whose government holds the current presidency of the Forum, considered it a unique space that will allow us to deepen our role in the midst of the global environmental crisis.

He also indicated knowing what we should work on so that this remains the main space for generating ideas, bringing us closer to better joint action at the regional level.

“On this occasion, we seek to promote the exchange of experiences, build on the various outcomes of environmental meetings and processes, and create synergies in the region,” said Meza.

Minai announced that the Extraordinary Session will provide the opportunity to review regional perspectives to contribute to the resumed session of the Fifth United Nations Environment Assembly, to be held from 28 February to 2 March 2022 in Nairobi, Kenya.
