Women from various popular movements, central unions, feminist groups and political parties gathered in the streets of Brazil on Saturday to protest the government of President Jair Bolsonaro.
Among the organizations convened are the Brazilian Women’s Expression Organization (AMB), the Women’s World March (MMM), the United Black Movement (MNO), the Landless Rural Workers’ Movement (MST) and the Union of Blacks and Blacks for Equality (Unegro).
In turn, organizations such as the Workers’ Party (PT), the Party of Socialism and Freedom (PSOL), the Brazilian Communist Party (PCdoB), the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores (CUT) and the Central Obrera y Obrera of Brazil (CTB) also participate in the mobilization.
In Brasilia, the capital, the call was announced at 3:00 p.m. local time in Praça Marielle Franco, in the southern commercial sector, near the Galería metro station.
“It is important for us to remove Bolsonaro, even a day before his government ends,” said Sonia Coelho, a member of the feminist organization Semperviva and WMM.
She believes that it is impossible to live with a government that destroys lives and rights every day.
For her part, representative of Levant Feminism Against Femicide, Rita Andrade, noted that Bolsonaro’s government had caused the dismantling of public policies that “were bringing important social progress” to Brazilians, but which had a special impact on women.
“We see that black women, women from the periphery, and indigenous women are more affected in this scenario. So, the act (…) is another way for all of us to say that this government must be stopped, and that there is not the slightest possibility of it continuing,” he added.
He also denounced the current executive’s killing of women, their children and the black population, adding that he does not care about the Brazilian people.
