They published the first mosquito survey in San Juan

Among the programs implemented by the Secretary of State, Science, Technology and Innovation (SECITI), non-refundable support (ANR) programs through the Undersecretary to promote the scientific and technological activity of scientific publications of local researchers.

One of those to receive this contribution was Leonardo Díaz Nieto, a graduate in biology, a degree he holds from the National University of San Juan (UNSJ), and a doctorate in biological sciences from the University of Mar del Plata.

In addition, Nieto is a Research Associate at CONICET, Institute and Museum of the Natural Sciences (IMCN), School of Exact Physical and Natural Sciences, UNSJ. Instructor/Researcher, Department of Biology, Faculty of Physical and Exact Natural Sciences, United Nations University. His line of research focuses on the study and development of techniques for controlling crop pests and insects of health importance, by means of symbiotic microorganisms. He also works in collaboration with researchers from IMCN where he conducts taxonomic and ecological studies of the various invertebrates found in the province, especially insects.

Published in Checklist, Journal of Biodiversity appeared on August 28, 2020, under the title New Records of Culicidae (Diptera) in Agricultural Oasis in San Juan Province, Argentina.

In it, Leonardo explains: “The fauna of Colicidus (mosquitoes) in San Juan has been underestimated. Studies have reported that the Cuyo region represents only 12% of the total known mosquito diversity of Argentina. San Juan represented only 3%. In this work the first survey of the formation was carried out identified mosquitoes in major agricultural valleys in San Juan County doubling the total number of species recognized in the county (from 8 to 16 currently.) It was determined that most mosquito breeding sites (62%) were associated with poor water management by residents of the studied areas. New distribution points are described for Aedes aegypti Vector mosquitoes that cause various diseases such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya and yellow fever. This information is of vital importance to the province’s vector control program, which, based on the published data, will be able to take measures to control and prevent diseases caused by the bites of these insects.”

His opinion on the subsidies that the Secretary of Science, Technology and Innovation (SECITI) provides to publications of a scientific nature is clear: “I think it is a very good source of regional funding that helps researchers from San Juan to be able to publish their results in high-impact scientific journals. Currently, most of the Journals of this type have high publishing costs and dollars. Subsidies given by various national organizations are usually scarce when having to face such expenses. For these reasons, I consider these subsidies to be a great support from our province for local researchers,” states the professional.

The publication’s field is Biological Sciences-Entomology and Leonardo Díaz Nieto would like to resubmit a request for support in a future publication.

About posting of non-refundable contributions

The Secretary of State for Science, Technology and Innovation (SECITI) of the San Juan Provincial Government is summoning teachers, researchers and extension workers in the science and technology field, to award non-refundable (ANR) contributions, destined for partial funding of articles accepted in scientific journals – national or international – relevant in their field .

Any other publication for the dissemination of the results of scientific research, whether in books or other materials or virtual support, accepted by the relevant editorial committee, whose content is closely related to knowledge on issues of regional interest and which may result in the benefit of increasing the population’s knowledge of the topics is also included. that have been searched.
