Venezuela’s National Assembly supports agreement with the International Criminal Court

The aim of the Convention is to seek justice and banish the actions of violators of rights that have not been punished.

On Thursday, the Venezuelan National Assembly approved in an extraordinary session the proposed agreement in support of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the government of that country.

The head of the legislature, Jorge Rodriguez, described the event as a victory for the country’s institutions and asserted that “in the end the truth will prevail. Those whom the empire supported are now nothing.”

“Venezuela will be able to continue to tell the world (that) we have never, and will never, kneel before the action of any actual power that exists on this planet,” he added.

He confirmed that the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, traveled to the South American country to recognize the Venezuelan state. He indicated that he had received an invitation from Attorney General Tariq William Saab, and confirmed that he had not met with opposition leaders.

Likewise, he stressed that it is necessary to work intensively in the investigation process so that crimes committed against the Venezuelan people do not go unpunished.

The agreement signed on November 3 by the International Criminal Court and the Venezuelan state provides for the investigation and punishment of potential acts and violations of human rights, and to do so through the institutions created by Venezuela and in accordance with the principles on the subject contained in its constitution.
