Science is moving forward in Mar del Plata | Extension

Under the theme “Science comes out on stage”, the National University of Mar del Plata (UNMDP) will present to the community on November 10 and 11 various projects created by teachers and researchers from that university. The exhibition, open and free, is supported by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Democratic Knowledge Acceleration, and can be seen in the foyer of the city’s Auditorium on the Atlantic Coast.

The exhibition will include 13 interactive facilities, responsible for UNDP faculties, which will follow an interdisciplinary path through the different areas of scientific knowledge being worked on in the institution.

The proposals are as follows: “Pieces from the history of workers”, “Pandemic of skirts”, “Kronos, are you?” , “Ways to Read” and “Arcades MDQ: Stories, Computer Science and Video Games” (Faculty of Humanities); “Images that inhabit the memory of the journey” and “I offer you the hands of your eyes” (Faculty of Architecture, Urbanism and Design); “Environmental interpretation of the Mar del Plata port reserve” and “The Conscience of Yoga” (Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences); “IOT Technologies Applied to Home Automation” and “Escape Lab” (Faculty of Engineering); “Rain Simulation” (Faculty of Agricultural Sciences) and “A Journey Toward Patient Safety through Clinical Simulation” (High School of Medicine).

The exhibition will begin on Wednesday 10, starting at 9, and the opening ceremony will take place at 5:30 pm, where UNMDP Professor and INTA-CONICET Researcher Fernando Andrade will speak. On Thursday at the same time, researcher Erica Carrizo, National Coordinator for Strategic Projects at the Ministry of Science and Technology, will lead a panel discussion. On the same day, at 7:00 pm, there will be an online presentation of the podcast “Capsule del tiempo”, prepared by the team of researchers “Historia Obrera”, coordinated by Gustavo Nicolás Contreras. This activity will be held in honor of the singer Palo Pandolfo – who passed away in July of this year – and the producer and translator of the songs that served as the basis for the capsule.

The meeting is part of the UNDP Science and Technology Secretariat’s Program for the Democratization of Knowledge, which in 2019 held “Meetings at the MAR”, a similar event that attracted more than three thousand people to the Museum of Contemporary Art.

In an interview with the University Extension, biologist and program coordinator, Tristan Simanauskas, explained that the idea is to “create a bridge; an approach between scientific activity and the formation of knowledge that takes place within the university and the local community.”

“Our current society is very much going through science and technology, and therefore requires training that allows us to become citizens who are able to make decisions on social, technological, environmental and labor issues,” Simanauskas said.

The activities of the democratization of knowledge program are not limited to the organization of these events only. Launched at the end of 2018, it has launched courses, seminars and training spaces that provide tools for public communication of scientific knowledge. Among its goals, is the consolidation of knowledge in the territory and its link to local problems, in order to “contribute to the generation of informed citizens with the capacity for decision-making, criticism and analysis,” according to the biologist.

For the selection of facilities, the program developed an invitation that encouraged and financed projects that would finally be shown in “Science Comes Out on Stage”.

“What we are trying through the program is that we try to create an exchange and for a common building between members of the university and the general public,” Simanauskas added, emphasizing that by presenting their research to the community, the scholars give back to the community. What she “invested and invested in her training.”

“We must not forget that all academics are supported by society as a whole through their taxes and must necessarily return to this society the investment they make in the development of their activity, and tell them what to do,” he said.
