India stressed the importance of relations with ASEAN

October 28, 2021, 1:36 pmNEW DELHI, Oct 28 (Princea Latina) Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, today emphasized the importance of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), made up of 10 countries from that region, in the country’s foreign policy.

Participating in the 18th India-Asia Summit held around Brunei, Modi highlighted New Delhi’s efforts in combating Covid-19 and affirmed his support for the initiatives of the international body in this regard, Chancellery Spokesman, Arindam Bagshi.

On the pandemic, Modi stressed that India had contributed medical supplies to the ASEAN Humanitarian Initiative for Myanmar and had contributed $1 million to the said infection control response fund.

The president also emphasized cooperation and regular exchanges in the field of health and traditional medicine, and the ASEAN leaders expressed their appreciation for India’s support for the international organization’s efforts to recover from the pandemic.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of increasing physical and digital connectivity between the parties and emphasized cooperation on digital inclusion.

Similarly, Modi announced India’s support for the ASEAN Cultural Heritage List initiative, on trade and investment, and called for an early review of the Goods Trade Agreement.

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Indo-ASEAN Partnership, 2022 was declared as the Year of Indo-Asia Friendship, and a joint statement on political, security, economic, social and cultural cooperation was welcomed.
