Flixbus will pay $172 million to Firstgroup, the current British owner of Greyhound, which reaches 2,400 North American destinations with about 16 million passengers a year.
“The purchase of Greyhound is an important step forward” in the development of Flixbus, said Jochen Engert, president and co-founder of the German company, which since its inception in 2013 has experienced rapid growth.
Flixbus launched its US offering in 2018, initially to compete with Greyhound, a company founded in 1914 and headquartered in Dallas, Texas.
In just a few years, the German carrier has become the most popular long-distance bus service in Germany. It operates in 36 countries, in addition to the United States, and since 2018 also provides rail services.
The covid-19 epidemic hit Greyhound hard and forced her to reduce her rotation. The group has ended its operations in Canada, with the exception of cross-border routes, due to the health crisis.
Greyhound buses have been a part of the American scene for decades and have been immortalized in many films and TV shows.
Firstgroup, which specializes in public rail and road transport, announced the sale of its activities in the United States for 4.6 billion euros, including the management of tens of thousands of the famous yellow school buses.
Through these operations, the group plans to focus on the UK and clean up its finances.
