Earthshot Award: Prince William giving a speech

The award is “a new global environmental award, designed to catalyze change and help repair our planet over the next ten years.” During the award ceremony, the Duke of Cambridge issued an impassioned plea to young people not to lose hope. In this “decisive decade,” he urged people to “inspire, act, and demand.”

During his speech, William announced that the launch of Earthshot next year will be held in the USA.

“Now I hope you’ll agree that London and the UK put in a great show in our first year, so for year two we have to hand the baton over to a country whose leadership is key to our Five Earthshots,” he said.

Where better than the nation that inspired the moon launch so many years ago?

“I am pleased to announce that the Earthshot Award will reach the USA in 2022.”

Presenting the winning prize in the Nature Conservation and Restoration category to the Costa Rican government, Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, said: “Nature is vital to all of us.

“A thriving natural world regulates our planet, nourishes our physical and mental health, and helps feed our families.

“But for too long, we neglected our wild spaces and now we are facing a series of tipping points.

“If we don’t act now, we will permanently destabilize our planet and rob our children of the future they deserve.”

Kate arrived in an Alexander McQueen dress made for her in 2011, while her husband wore a dark green velvet jacket and polo collar that Dermot O’Leary later described jokingly as “a very good-looking Bond.”

No stars traveled to London for the event and organizers asked guests to “go green when choosing their clothes” for the Apollo Awards inspired by the moon landing, dubbed Moonshot, which helped advance humanity’s technological achievements.

Among the winners were projects to restore coral reefs, redistribute unwanted food in poor conditions, and a project that addresses problems that contribute to air pollution in India.

William’s father, Prince Charles, took to Twitter to comment on the event.

He said: “I am very proud of my son, William, for his growing commitment to the environment and the bold ambition of the Earthshot Award.

“As a scientist, we must come together to inspire, reimagine and build the sustainable future we so desperately need.”

He signed the tweet: “Your Royal Highness, Prince of Wales.”
