PORT-AU-PRINCE, September 21 – Some 128 Haitians have arrived at Toussaint Louverture Airport in this capital, as part of mass deportations by the US government to contain the migration crisis at its southern border.
Jean-Nego Bonor Delva, coordinator of the National Office of Migration, confirmed that 83 adults and 45 children have received food, in addition to undergoing diagnostic tests to detect the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
And with them there are 455 returnees since the day before the Washington administration began deportations of those stranded in the corridor separating Texas and Mexico, where it is estimated at more than 10,000 people, most of them Haitians.
Bonheur confirmed that at least six more flights will arrive on Tuesday, half of them to Port-au-Prince and the rest to the city of Cap-Haitien in the far north of the country.
The government promised to receive its nationals, many of whom left the country in the past five years for Chile and Brazil, and then tried to reach the United States.
Prime Minister Ariel Henry acknowledged that the difficult situation the country is going through due to political disagreements, the impact of natural disasters and lack of opportunities, has led to the current migration crisis.
Although he distanced himself from the origin of the problem, he assured that he would conscientiously handle the “heavy file”, welcoming the honor of those citizens in difficulty.
He also deplored the treatment of migrants and noted that the application of regional laws should not disregard people’s fundamental rights.
Since the 2010 earthquake that killed more than 200,000 people, more Haitians have decided to leave the country, several times in rudimentary boats without security, and at other times during the dangerous journey across the interior of the continent.
The numbers have increased dramatically in recent years, and the political and economic crisis, the assassination of President Jovenel Moss, as well as the recent earthquake, have increased the number of people trying to try their luck outside the country. (PL)
