Washington-. Today, this entity reported that the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) will hold its 59th Steering Council focused on analyzing the response to the Covid-19 pandemic and the major health challenges in the region.

It is scheduled to take place from the 20th to the 24th of this month, for the second year in a row, the event will be held approximately, and the ministers of the sector in the Americas will present the experiences of their countries in dealing with the current health situation as an emergency.

At the opening session, speeches are expected by Presidents Sebastian Pinera of Chile and Costa Rica, Carlos Alvarado Quesada, as well as Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, and Director of the Pan American Health Organization, Carissa Etienne. .

Also speaking at that meeting will be the President of the Inter-American Development Bank, Mauricio Clavier Caroni, and Secretary of the US Department of Health and Social Services, Xavier Becerra.

In addition, the Minister of Health and Social Protection of Colombia and the outgoing President of the Steering Board of the Pan American Health Organization, Fernando Ruiz Gómez, will intervene.

The Director of the Pan American Health Organization will present on the 20th the annual report of her administration for the period from July 2020 to July 2021, which focuses on the cooperation that the organization is providing to help countries respond to the epidemic, while preserving and enhancing its achievements in the field of health.

Discussions will also address policies or roadmaps aimed at increasing the production capacity of essential medicines and health technologies in the region.

In parallel with the Steering Council, there will be activities such as an event on technology transfer for the production of mRNA vaccines, where the Pan American Health Organization will announce the beneficiaries and regional projects selected to develop these products, as well as the consortium of manufacturers that will work on this technology.

For an exchange on the overall response to the protracted crisis brought on by the pandemic and the link between health and the economy, the Director of the Pan American Health Organization and the Director of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, Alicia Barcena, will hold a meeting in the framework of Council 59.

During the week of the event, the PAHO Award for Management and Leadership in Health Services 2021 will be awarded.
