QUITO (Sputnik) – Ecuador on Thursday sent a batch of about three tons of humanitarian aid to Haiti to help alleviate the crisis that affected its population after the August 14 earthquake.

“Today, Ecuador sent a batch of humanitarian aid to Haiti to help alleviate the difficult situation faced by the people of Haiti, after the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck the Caribbean nation on August 14 (…) the batch is about three tons,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement. .

An armed forces plane carrying humanitarian aid took off from the city of Quito (north) at 9:00 local time (14:00 GMT).

The shipment consisted of more than 640 kilograms of non-perishable food, more than 300,000 hydroxychloroquine tablets, and supplemental sleeping sets with mattresses, blankets, sheets and pillows.

According to the statement, the materials provided by the Ecuadorean Executive, a private NGO and two food companies will be delivered to the Civil Protection Directorate of the Haitian government.

During the official farewell ceremony for the plane, Foreign Minister, Mauricio Montalvo, said that more than 650,000 people in the Caribbean country are facing needs.

He added that in the face of this situation, the Ecuadorean state has joined forces through its institutions and in coordination with the diplomatic mission of Haiti in Ecuador to organize the delivery of humanitarian aid.

So far, it is estimated that the earthquake in Haiti left more than 2,000 people dead, 12,000 injured, hundreds of thousands of homes destroyed, and more than 650,000 people in need of international humanitarian assistance.
