UK to evacuate 9,000 people from Afghanistan | world | DW

British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab indicated, on Wednesday (25/8/2021), that the United Kingdom evacuated 9 thousand of its citizens from Afghanistan and Afghans who worked for its forces and are in danger.

The minister told Radio Times that British forces had been able to evacuate these people since August 15, when the Taliban seized the capital, Kabul.

In addition, Raab considered that the Taliban would not be able to prevent qualified Afghans, such as doctors, from fleeing the country, because the fundamentalist Islamic group would not be able to avoid the “refugee crisis” by closing the streets or closing the Afghan border. .

If the Taliban want to avoid a “brain drain”, the minister said, “they will have to find a way to attract other factions, to be more inclusive and more moderate in the face of the former Taliban.”

Raab’s comments came after G7 leaders held a virtual meeting on Tuesday to address the Afghan crisis.

At the end of the meeting, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the G7 countries would demand “safe passage” from the Taliban for those who want to leave Afghanistan after August 31, the date US forces expect to leave the country.
