Tegucigalpa, August 27 (EFE). – Honduras this Friday asked the United Kingdom for “support at the highest level” at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), to be held in November in Scotland, with a view to accessing green climate funds to mitigate the effects of global warming.
The request was made by the Coordinating Secretary-General of the Government of Honduras, Carlos Madero, during a meeting in Tegucigalpa with the UK’s regional ambassador for COP26, Fiona Clauder, according to a statement from the Honduran Presidency.
Madero gave Clauder a report on the damage done to Honduras in recent years by climate change, particularly the losses from Hurricanes Eta and Eta that hit Central America last November.
“Climate change has come to destroy the country’s growth, affect the poor, which in turn has led to a lot of inequality,” the senior official said.

Madero said the Honduran government was “respectfully” asking the UK to “help us at the highest level to be our interlocutors at the COP26 summit”.
He explained that “in that conference, it is necessary for the world to see what our country is suffering from the drought that affects the crops in what we call the dry corridor and the tropical phenomena that destroyed the national production apparatus in the Sola Valley.” .
“If the rich countries do not realize this dangerous situation, climate change will continue to cause more poverty and migration,” the government’s general coordinator noted.
He added that the COVID-19 pandemic and the effects of ETA and ETA had exacerbated the socio-economic situation of the Central American country, also causing a “Honduran exodus to the United States”.
He said that at COP26, Honduras will present a plan for sustainable reconstruction and development.
“We will explore alternatives that would allow Honduras, as one of the countries most affected by climate change, to have better access to climate finance, especially the Green Climate Fund,” the official said.

The British Regional Ambassador to COP26 highlighted the importance of supporting countries like Honduras, as they are “victims of climate change”.
The diplomat said the UK wanted to strike a balance “between mitigation and adaptation in countries like Honduras”, which he said international cooperation “would be essential”.
“We need all donor countries to commit to ambitious projects, so that international banks can fund programs to mitigate climate change, and have an essential role,” Clauder said.
He stated that he would call at the UN conference for “ambitious goals on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening adaptation measures to protect communities and natural habitats, mobilizing funds for the environment and accelerating cooperation between governments, businesses and civil society to tackle climate goals more quickly.”
