El Salvador is asking FIFA to get the green light to play a qualifier in the United States.

The president of the Salvadoran Football Association (Fasfoot), Hugo Carrillo, is seeking permission from FIFA to allow his first team to play home matches in the Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers in the United States.

“The federation has started to file objections to FIFA to see this change,” Carrillo said, acknowledging that he would prefer to play in the United States.

The request was prompted by the country’s ban on sporting events open to the public.

The director noted that other countries were “allowed to do so because of the coronavirus.”

“I think we can’t be the exception until they can give us that opportunity to change our headquarters,” he added.

“We know that the national team matches that will be held in September are very important, it is the World Cup competition,” he said.

The Legislative Assembly of El Salvador, at the request of the government, agreed to ban large public and private events for 90 days, such as “concerts, gatherings, sporting events open to the public and celebrations of the patron saint”.

The National Sports Institute of El Salvador (Indes) said in a press release that national and international sporting events “may take place, but without the presence of fans”.

El Salvador will play the final stage of the CONCACAF match, where three direct tickets to Qatar 2021 and a play-off are distributed.

Carrillo stressed that El Salvador should face the United States and Honduras at the beginning of September.

The First Division of Football in El Salvador announced, on Tuesday, that the team leaders will meet on Thursday to “analyze, study and determine” what will happen with the Apertora 2021.

Carrillo hopes the domestic league leaders will make the “best decisions”, and added that the lack of audience “could be complicating the finances” of the division’s teams.

The Salvadoran team is in the United States, where the 2021 Gold Cup will be held.

At the end of Day One, he finished top of Group A against Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago and Guatemala. EFE
