Cybersecurity Improvement in Mexico – Luces del Siglo

Mexico City. Mexico has improved its position in the field of cybersecurity, despite being one of the most hacked countries.

According to the International Telecommunication Union’s Global Cybersecurity Index (from2020, the country ranked 4th in the Americas in terms of cybersecurity and 52nd globally, out of a total of 182 countries.

The index was topped by the United States, the United Kingdom, and Saudi Arabia. In America, it was the United States, Canada and Brazil.

The country scored 81.68 points out of a possible 100. The best evaluated aspects are technical and collaborative measures in the field of cybersecurity, as well as development capacity.

Meanwhile, regulatory and legal procedures are the weakest areas.

The ranking consists of a self-assessment conducted by countries regarding their cybersecurity.

“We’re at 80, it’s like saying we have minimal cybersecurity issues,” said Jorge Osorio, Mexico’s information security spokesperson.

Victor Ruiz, founder of SILIKN, stated that the index results should not generate a misperception about cybersecurity that we do not have.

“(The arrangement) generates a misperception that we are safe and much lacking as a state by the government; however, companies protect themselves.”

Oswaldo Palacios, Guardicore’s Mexico and Latin America sales director, considered that there is a lack of public investment in cybersecurity and that the arrangement does not demonstrate the country’s cybersecurity.

They agreed that the lack of a cybersecurity policy is an issue that must be resolved. Data from Kaspersky reveals that Mexico is among the top five countries that receive the most attacks on business, mobile devices, ransomware, and spyware.
