The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, valued the agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom on fishing matters and stressed that the Spanish fleet “will continue to fish normally and safely.”

Planas called it “good news” that an agreement was reached on Wednesday “on the 2021 catch limits for jointly managed fish stocks.”
In his Twitter message, the minister conveys the statement of the European Commissioner for the Environment, Virginius Syncevicius, who asserts that in this way “predictability and continuity are provided to our fleets with final TACs for the rest of the year. This is beneficial to fishermen and women, our coastal communities and our ports.”

The European Union and the United Kingdom reached an agreement on Wednesday on fishing limits in 2021 for jointly managed fish stocks. This was achieved after a phone conversation between Sinkevicius, and the UK’s foreign minister for the sector, Hon George Eustice, the Community Executive said in a statement.

The agreement guarantees the fishing rights that EU and UK fleets have in both EU and UK waters until the end of 2021, as stipulated in the Trade and Cooperation Agreement that Brussels and London signed at Christmas after Brexit. It sets Total Allowable Catch (TAC) in 2021 for 75 common fish stocks, as well as for some deep-sea stocks in 2021 and 2022.
The agreement – which should be signed in the coming days – also provides clarification to fishermen about the limits of access for species outside the quota and will allow the parties to conduct quota exchanges.
As explained by the European Commission, the agreement takes into account the sustainability of the marine environment, on the advice of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea.
