The government decided to include the UK and Japan in the list of countries and special administrative regions whose residents are not affected by temporary restrictions on non-essential travel to the European Union across external borders.
This came in an order published on Friday in the Official Gazette of the State (BOE), which justifies this decision by saying that Spain receives a number of visitors from the United Kingdom, “so many economic sectors need to adapt their capabilities in advance to the changes that occur in the borders.”
Along these lines, the order indicates that an amendment to the list is currently under discussion within the Council of the European Union, which is expected to allow the UK and Japan to be included among the countries exempt from restrictions. In fact, as you remember, many member states are already putting them in that privileged position.
The order will go into effect on May 24, and represents a new amendment to the list of countries after Spain listed Israel on May 11, as the country recorded a decrease in the number of injuries and deaths after a sharp recovery in late January.
In this way, with the addition of the United Kingdom and Japan, the list now consists of Israel, Northern Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Rwanda, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and China. Residents of the Hong Kong and Macau Special Administrative Region are also exempt from the restrictions.
