In July 1987, the Genesis line-up, consisting of drummer and vocalist Phil Collins, keyboardist Tony Banks, and bassist and bassist Mike Rutherford, completed their 1986–1987 world tour to promote their thirteenth studio album. Subtle touch (1986).
The 112-concert tour, attended by an estimated 3.5 million people, was extremely stressful for the band. Especially for Rutherford, after his father died and he almost lost his son, Harry, due to his difficult birth.
The band entered a three-and-a-half year period of inactivity, during which each member continued their solo projects. Collins achieved worldwide commercial success with her single release …but seriously (1989), while Rutherford’s band, Mike and the Mechanics, also began to have hits.
Banks and Rutherford expected Collins to leave the band around this time, but he stayed to record another Genesis album with them.
The band initially agreed to begin production in 1990, but it was postponed to 1991 due to Collins’ lengthy solo tour. The album’s title is partly derived from electronic dance music’s popularity and presence on the charts at the time.
