Band leader Bono explained that the upbeat song is about losing everything, yet finding joy in what you have.
The video for beautiful day
The song’s video, directed by Jonas Akerlund, shows the band walking through Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris (where they filmed… Everything you can’t leave behind), with scenes of the band playing in an aircraft hangar, in the lounge, and on a runway dotted with large planes taking off and landing above. Middle East Airlines and Air France appear in the video.
This video begins by showing a sunrise which follows the beat of the first chords of the song.
Bono is then shown singing and later scenes show him running through the streets that pass under the Charles de Gaulle International Airport in Paris.
Additionally, the band is shown walking into the airport with scenes of the band playing on the runway, at the same time as planes take off and land.
An alternate video for the song is on the DVD of U218 videoswas recorded in Eze, France, and appears on U2’s exclusive CD, the bonus DVD of The best of 1990-2000 The U2 Video DVD.
A month before the album’s release, a live version of the song was filmed in Dublin on the roof of the Clarence Hotel. Appears on the Elevation 2001 DVD bonus features: Live from Boston (Although on the DVD it is marked as “Toronto, Canada”).
