London, December 28 (EFE). – At least 21 children have died in the UK as a result of streptococcal A infection, after the Scottish Public Health Agency announced on Wednesday two deaths in Scotland among children under the age of 10.
According to the report, between October 3 and December 25, there were seven deaths in the Scottish Territories due to group A strep infection, two of them in children under the age of 10.
A total of 21 children died in the UK as a result of the disease caused by streptococcus A, whose symptoms include skin infections – impetigo – scarlet fever and sore throats.
Although the vast majority of these infections are relatively mild and treatable with antibiotics, in rare cases the bacteria can cause life-threatening illness.
There are already several European countries – including Spain, France, Ireland and the United Kingdom – that have detected an increase in cases of this disease among children under the age of 10 in recent months, including many deaths.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the risk of European populations contracting an invasive disease caused by Streptococcus A is “low,” although governments should be alert to a hypothetical increase in pediatric cases. EFE
