19 people were arrested on Saturday over their alleged plans to upset the Epsom Derby celebrationOne of the most popular horse races in the UK.
As stated in a statement by the Surrey Police (Southern England), The 19 people were arrested even before action was taken over the “planned criminal riot” of the festivalwhich brings together tens of thousands of people at an event attended by the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Eleven people were arrested in the early hours of the morning at homes in the towns of Mitcham and Pavelet “according to intelligence reports received.”
Eight other people were later arrested in a car in the nearby town of Burgh Heath.
The authorities accuse the 19 who remain in police custody of Suspicion of a “conspiracy to disturb public order”.
“We have made it clear that criminal activity will not be tolerated at the Epsom Derby Festival. Michael Hodder, Superintendent of Police for Surrey, said, according to the note, “As a result of the intelligence, we have arrested 19 people who we believe intended to disrupt today’s events.”
Hodder added that his officers would remain at the race and side events to “keep the public safe and prevent crime.”
